Singulos Research Perceptus: Augmented Reality that Perceives Physical Objects

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Despite it being an enabling technology for the nascent Metaverse, Augmented Reality (AR) has shown limited usefulness, constrained primarily to a few industrial applications and the mobile device game Pokémon GO.

Singulos Research wants to remove AR’s limitations. Its Perceptus platform uses computer vision to recognize and delineate physical objects within the AR application’s field of view.

Perceptus supports an as-yet unclear opportunity to build innovative applications that combine AR and the physical world.

Demos include recognizing scattered LEGO blocks on a table (thus enabling the user to assemble the blocks in AR) and a chess game where the human user moves physical pieces while the computer opponent moves virtual ones.

What Singulos needs now is a killer app: some application that shows sufficient business value to prove the worth of the platform, just as Pokémon GO did for AR in the consumer space.
