Titaniam: Data Protection and Privacy via Encryption in Use

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Established encryption products help secure data when they are at rest (in databases, object stores, and file systems) as well as when they are in motion (as messages). Protecting data at the moment they are in use, however, is a trickier problem. After all, how can you use encrypted data without decrypting them?

Homomorphic encryption is one approach. With homomorphic encryption, it’s possible to operate on encrypted data. However, homomorphic encryption adds too much overhead for many enterprise applications.

Titaniam has addressed the encrypted data in use problem without homomorphic encryption. Titaniam focuses on securing queries and their corresponding results by indexing encrypted data in order to support secure search, as well as various privacy operations like tokenization, redaction, and masking.

Titaniam provides for flexible usage either on-premises or in the cloud via a vault, proxy, plug-in, API, or their studio application. It also supports bring your own key (BYOK) without requiring customers to move their keys to the Titaniam platform.

Titaniam is able to secure both the request and response portions of enterprise search, as it is able to index encrypted content in order to support encrypted queries without decrypting them.
