Avassa: Application Orchestration Platform that Extends Cloud Operating Model to the Edge

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Near edge ‘data centers’ typically consist of a small number of servers running in a small facility or even in a closet. They have fixed hardware constraints, tricky security requirements, and limited access for in-person service.

Nevertheless, organizations deploying on the edge want to run and manage these facilities as though they were an extension of the cloud.

That’s where Avassa comes in. Avassa offers an application orchestration platform it custom-built for the edge. Avassa handles the particular security requirements of such facilities, including the need for end-to-end encryption in the absence of perimeter-based security.

Avassa also provides increased autonomy for such equipment, enabling servers to reboot themselves, for example. Avassa enables applications to continue to operate during times of intermittent network connectivity.

In addition, Avassa supports multitenancy in an environment with a limited number of nodes (physical servers or VMs).

This orchestration platform is more lightweight and edge-compatible than Kubernetes. It runs Docker containers, thus supporting modern microservices deployments at the edge without the need for Kubernetes.
