Alluxio: Data Orchestration Platform with Improved Cloud Native Functionality

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

Since we last covered Alluxio in April 2021, the data orchestration platform vendor has added significant capabilities that help position it as cloud native. (We first covered the company in November 2019).

Alluxio provides a many-to-many data orchestration platform that accepts multiple data sources via several interfaces. It then supports many different data store technologies, providing hybrid application portability and no-copy data access via a unified namespace across data centers and clouds.

Alluxio’s latest version adds flexible access control with an AWS S3 data API that supports the open authentication protocol and User Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC) using the Open Policy Agent (OPA).

In addition, Alluxio now offers cross-cluster metadata synchronization that provides lightweight synching without the need to copy the underlying data.

Finally, Alluxio is adding a multi-tenant Kubernetes operator that increases support for DevOps automation.

This operator support, combined with the OPA support, position Alluxio well in the cloud native space.
