An Intellyx Brain Candy Update
Since we last covered Cosmonic in November 2022, WebAssembly (WASM) has turned a corner in the marketplace. What was a paradigm-shifting but confusingly complex architectural approach has become a must-have for enterprises who require greater efficiency and cost savings than Kubernetes and containerization can provide alone.
Cosmonic has been driving the growth of WASM since its early days. Now the company is rolling out Cosmonic Control, and enterprise-class WASM platform that brings multitenancy, enterprise-grade security, Functions-as-a-Service (serverless) capabilities, and other enterprise-level requirements to organizations leveraging WASM.
The value propositions to enterprises are dramatic. WASM provides granular language-independent abstractions down to the Linux system call level, enabling language-agnostic WASM executables to run in the same Linux process.
The result is executable-to-executable communication times on the order of microseconds and start times in the milliseconds, while providing ‘scale to zero’ capabilities that require no compute or memory resources when idle.
In fact, WASM is so fast and sparing of resources that it’s possible to build many language-independent layers of abstraction upon one another, thus taking advantage of any existing enterprise infrastructure including virtual machines and containers, freeing organizations from the limitations of ‘develop by template’ approaches.
Now with Cosmonic Control, enterprises can take advantage of these dramatic WASM benefits in environments with existing assets – the primary difference between the enterprise context and born-in-the-cloud models that have been the early adopters of WASM.
