Understanding CoSMo’s differentiators, therefore, requires an understanding of complex systems vs. complicated ones. Complex systems are systems of systems that exhibit emergent properties, which are properties of the system as a whole but not of its component systems.
In business terms, such complex systems generally include humans as subsystems. Individually, humans are autonomous agents, but in aggregate, we exhibit emergent behaviors that can be stubbornly unpredictable using traditional analytical methods.
CoSMo, however, models and simulates complex systems like smart cities, as well as ‘merely’ complicated systems like electrical smart grids – which in reality, are typically complex in part as well.
The result: surprising and valuable insights into behaviors of complex and complicated systems impossible to obtain anywhere else, yet essential for effective, business-focused decision making regarding those systems.
