SoftIron: Custom Hardware Purpose-Built for Ceph SDS

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Ceph is popular open source software-defined storage (SDS) technology for object, block, and file storage that has matured to the point that it is a favored component of many OpenStack and Kubernetes deployments.

While SDS abstracts the underlying storage hardware, Ceph’s performance depends in large part on that hardware. The best abstraction can’t make up for slow gear or hardware bottlenecks.

That’s where SoftIron fits in. SoftIron offers a managed implementation of Ceph, Debian Linux, and its administration GUI on custom-built hardware that it has optimized for Ceph. The result: performance at wire speed at less than 100 watts per 1U form factor.
