SoftIron: Redefining private cloud with an on-prem hyposcaler

SoftIronAn Intellyx Brain Candy Update

SoftIron just released a new HyperCloud offering to ease the effort setting up your own multi-tenant private cloud in a datacenter, including substrate server hardware and software-defined configuration of elastic compute and storage resources.

A few years ago, it seemed like everybody was going to move to a public cloud, if you believed the pundits and hyperscalers. Now the pendulum is swinging back, as companies seek to repatriate application and data workloads back to their own data centers for performance, cost control, or security reasons. Unfortunately, building your own secure private cloud that is ready for modern cloud native application delivery isn’t easy, due to vendor consolidation and modernization concerns.

Since our last briefings with SoftIron in 2022, 2021, and 2019, the company has built on its contributions to the open source Ceph storage project, as well as building a turnkey cloud environment solution with a closed software supply chain for their own lines of secure rack hardware. DevOps teams can manage the access and consumption of infrastructure in an airgapped instance, or across multiple HyperCloud environments, and bring their own tools, APIs, and IaC automation scripts.

I’m having fun calling this approach “Hyposcaling” because it does offer the ease of use of a leading hyperscaler within the enterprise estate, while consuming highly granular resources tailored to the needs of each application workload, without the unpredictable operational expense.
