SoftIron: Optimized, Integrated, and Software-Defined Data Center Infrastructure

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

When we first covered SoftIron in May 2019, its focus was on delivering custom hardware purpose-built for the open source Ceph software-defined storage (SDS) infrastructure project.

By the time we wrote a white paper for the company in February 2020, its focus had shifted to secure provenance: guaranteeing the customers of its hardware solution that all components of that hardware came from specified sources (sovereignty) and did just what they were supposed to do with no compromising malware (security).

Today, SoftIron has rounded out its approach to data center infrastructure by combining optimized hardware, its own flavor of Linux, standard Ceph SDS, along with integrated management and support.

In addition to the secure provenance value proposition, SoftIron also provides a management interface for Ceph, abstracting the offering’s technical interface, improving usability for different types of users.
