AlefEdge: 5G-Like Edge Services Leveraging a Network of Private Edge Clouds

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

AlefEdge supports a burgeoning developer community around 5G-based applications with a network of private edge clouds that emulate 5G while leveraging 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and other currently available protocols.

At the core of this strategy is the realization that 5G will depend on the edge – including mini-cloud data centers at cell towers, points of presence, enterprise offices, and other geographically distributed locations.

In order to build edge-centric 5G apps, developers require a comprehensive abstraction that allows them to leverage existing mobility protocols as 5G protocols mature and become widely available. In essence, AlefEdge’s platform is providing this abstraction.

Cloud-native computing requires a similar abstraction that abstracts compute, storage, and network resources – the underlying infrastructure of the cloud. AlefEdge’s abstraction extends cloud-native to mobility – the telco-centric context for 5G applications and services.

The result is a coherent abstraction that brings together the mobility-centric world of the telcos and the cloud-centric world of enterprises and web scale companies, providing a path toward the convergence that has been the holy grail for IP-based telecommunications since the 1980s.
