An Intellyx Brain Candy Update
Equinix has fully integrated its March 2020 acquisition of Packet, transforming the bare metal as-a-service offering into Equinix Metal (we last covered Packet in December 2019).
Adding such a service to Equinix’s traditional colocation offering gives hyperscalers and other massive consumers of cloud-capable data centers the additional flexibility of outsourcing the hardware part of building hyperscale clouds to a trusted third party with numerous data centers around the world.
However, Equinix is more than a colocation provider. Today, its primary value-add is as an interconnection provider, bringing both carrier connections as well as connectivity to a broad cloud and enterprise ecosystem to its customers.
Equinix Metal, therefore, does more than offer the bare metal service to Equinix’s customers. It brings the full power of the Equinix ecosystem to those customers, leveraging the customizability of bare metal in the bargain – especially as customers build out their cloud-native infrastructures.
