Wirepas: Non-Cellular 5G Connectivity for Enterprise IoT

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Wirepas offers software that enables IoT devices to communicate with each other in a peer-to-peer fashion using 5G protocols.

However, unlike private 5G, Wirepas networks do not require a carrier or a typical 5G base station.

The Wirepas software is able to choose the particular frequency of the 5G communication based upon the distance between devices, and is thus able to connect devices in close proximity with low power, thus improving battery efficiency.

With Wirepas, IoT devices are self-managing and largely autonomous. Following cloud-native principles, the company provides a declarative, configuration-based control plane.

Wirepas isn’t currently suitable for high-bandwidth applications like video, but it does support 5G’s high-density endpoint capabilities.
