Bimodal IT and IBM Watson? ‘It’s A Trap’

People love talking about their successes, but getting them to own up to the challenges they’re facing is far more difficult. When those challenges are with large, influential companies, people tend to clam up.

That’s the situation with a recent interview I conducted for Forbes. The interviewees were perhaps too candid for their own good, and their manager pulled the plug on identifying them and their company in the article.

Here, then, is the anonymized version – mixed together with stories from a few other companies to make it even harder to discern the source. While the story is thus somewhat fictionalized, the quotes are all authentic.

Challenge #1: Gartner’s Bimodal Advice

The executives at this company – let’s call them Horizon – are fans of Gartner, and as a result, they decided to follow Gartner’s advice and separate their fast, innovative digital group from their ‘traditional’ IT organization. As a result, they risked falling into the Bimodal IT trap.
