Flexential: From Data Center Colocation to the Edge

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Flexential operates 40 data centers with 25 national peering points in the US, offering private cloud services and colocation to enterprises and web scale companies.

What brought Flexential to our attention, however, is their efforts to build out the edge.

By partnering with wireless tower provider American Tower, Flexential is rolling out the Flexential Local Edge solution.

These edge computing ‘mini’ data centers leverage a 100 Gbps networking backbone (soon to be 400 Gbps) to bring massive compute resources closer to companies and consumers, supporting big data requirements like AI on the edge while delivering the low-latency connectivity necessary for real-time applications like autonomous vehicles.

Flexential takes a software-defined networking approach that abstracts a protected MPLS network backbone that runs at OSI level 2, thus supporting multiple networking protocols via software-defined controls.

The combination of its edge computing and software-defined networking capabilities positions Flexential well for the 5G rollout and the demand for next-generation enterprise services that 5G will intensify.
