Hyperconverged Infrastructure
Hyperconverged infrastructure, or HCI, refers to very highly concentrated compute and data storage resources, usually in highly specialized, tuned data centers. Today’s HCI is no longer only on-premises though, and can be largely software-defined, with virtualized infrastructure, and even exist in a hybrid cloud environment based on demand. Hyperconverged is often used for intense streaming applications, such as multiple video recording feeds in Smart Cities and the like.
Most HCI vendors have moved on and started calling themselves Hybrid IT or Hybrid Cloud providers in some sense, or aimed for the management thereof as an AI Ops or IT Ops play.
